BALLS
Ecki works as a baker in the
family business of his parents in the
industrial West German village of Boldrup, but his heart belongs to
football. For
years he has sparkled as goalie for the hometown soccer team FC
Boldrup. But
on a single day his world collapses: first he ruins the chances of his
team to move up into the regional league, and then to everyone's
– and his own – surprise he is outed as gay and
thrown out the
club. That is more than Ecki can stand for and he demands revenge. He
challenges his former
team to a match in four weeks with a team he will put together
– made
up of gay players.
With no little difficulty and
the help of his sister he manages to
scour the dives of the big city of Dortmund and find the Magnificent
Eleven, a
motley crew of would-be athletes who at first appear to know little
about football. But with the help of the grumpy, homophobic
ex-professional
kicker Karl they grow into a united squad that can take on any team of
“normal” players.
With BALLS Sherry Hormann has
created a feel-good comedy that skilfully
confronts prejudice against homosexuality. As the virgin gay Ecki,
stage actor Maximilian Brückner demonstrates in his first film
role the necessary innocence to fit the part and at the same time the
strength to dispel the clichés about gays. A
heartstring-tugging comedy about
friendship, respect for the individual, and the courage to be

Where Ecky comes from soccer stars are working-class heroes and soccer
is a sport for hard-working, hard-drinking and hard-nosed 'real' men.
Ecky's been the popular goalie of his small hometown's team for years.
But it only takes one kiss to out him. A gay goalie? The whole town
yells "foul" and his penalty is getting kicked off the team. The
ridicule he and his family are subjected to is bad enough but what's
even worse for Ecky, he's not just gay, he's a virgin. So, out of the
closet, he sets off for the big city, but not before challenging his
former teammates to a game against an all-gay team he's going to put
together.
When he starts cruising the "scene" looking for possible candidates it
seems to be a hopeless endeavor. But he's convinced he's not alone and
- with a little imagination and persistence - one by one, he rounds up
enough players. Among them: a Turkish Beckham fan, two Brazilian ball
virtuosos, a lesbian trapped in a young man's body, several leather
clad bikers and a handsome hospital orderly Ecky falls for in the bat
of an
eyelash. But what's a team without a trainer? A grouchy old soccer pro
overcomes his homophobia for the love of the game and takes them under
his wing.
The day of the big game arrives. It's time for breakaways and
crossovers, dribbling and scoring, time to kick some straight jock ass

Ecki travaille comme boulanger
dans l’entreprise familiale de
ses parents, à Boldrup, un village de la région

Münster, mais
sa seule passion, c’est le football. Il est depuis des
années le
valeureux gardien de
but dans l’équipe du club local. Mais en une
journée,
tout son univers
s’écroule : après qu’il a
gâché les chances
de qualification de son
équipe dans la ligue régionale, il est le premier
surpris
quand on révèle en public
son homosexualité - ce qui lui vaut
d’être exclu du club.
Ecki n’a
pas l’intention de se laisser faire. Il lance un
défi à
son ancienne équipe pour
prendre sa revanche : il reviendra quatre semaines plus tard avec sa
propre équipe,
entièrement composée de footballeurs homosexuels.
Au prix de quelques
difficultés mais avec l’aide
de sa soeur Susanne, Ecki réussit, dans la grande ville de
Dortmund, à
rassembler les hommes de son glorieux onze - une
équipe tout
à fait
disparate qui n’a pas l’air de s’y
connaître beaucoup en
football. Grâce à
la contribution de Karl, un ancien pro homophobe et acerbe,
c’est
bientôt une
équipe soudée qui est mise sur pied,
prête à
affronter n’importe
quel adversaire "normal".
Sherry Hormann a
réalisé ici une comédie pleine
d’optimisme
qui s’en prend avec souveraineté aux
préjugés
sur l’homosexualité. L’acteur de
théâtre Maximilian Brückner, en gay
malgré lui et encore vierge, interprète son
premier

In een klein dorpje Boldrup
woont Ecki.
Hij is keeper bij het
plaatselijke voetbalelftal. Als hij door een schwalbe van een
tegenstander in de laatste minuut een penalty tegen krijgt en zijn
teamgenoten er per ongeluk achterkomen dat hij homo is wordt hij uit
het team gezet. Ecki zint op wraak en gaat met zijn oude teamgenoten
een weddenschap aan. Ecki heeft vier weken de tijd om een team dat
louter uit homo's bestaat samen te stellen om tegen zijn oude team te
laten spelen. Op zoek naar nieuwe teamgenoten reist hij af naar
Dortmund, waar zijn zus woont.
Bakkersknecht Ecki is keeper bij een voetbalclubje in zijn geboortedorp
Boldrup. Hij is daar al jarenlang de publiekslieveling. Waar hij
vandaan komt zijn voetbalsterren helden van het volk en is voetbal een
sport voor harde stoere mannen. Op een dag geeft hij een medespeler een
vriendschappelijke zoen. Daarna beseft hij echter dat hij op mannen
valt. Zijn teamgenoten zien een homo in hun elftal niet zitten en
sturen Ecki weg uit het team. Met hulp van zijn zus en een geschifte
ex-voetballer gaat hij op zoek naar kandidaten om een 'all gay'
voetbalteam te vormen. Dit is echter geen makkelijke opdracht.
Uiteindelijk slaagt hij er in en daagt hij zijn vroegere vrienden uit

Fotball - bare for ekte mannfolk? (Männer wie wir
: Fußball - nur für echte Männer?)
Der hvor Ecky (Maximilian Brückner) kommer fra, er
fotballstjerner
arbeiderklassehelter og fotball er en sport for hardtarbeidende, ekte
mannfolk. Men det tar bare et eneste kyss før
målmannen
Ecky blir avslørt som homofil.
Hele byen vender seg mot ham og straffen er å bli sparket ut
av
laget. Latterliggjøringen av Ecky og hans familie er ille
nok,
men Ecky er ikke bare homofil - han er jomfru også. Han
bestemmer
seg for å komme ut av skapet og dra til nærmeste
storby,
men ikke før han har utfordret sine gamle kamerater til en
kamp
med et hundre prosent homofilt lag han skal sette sammen.
Skeivt fotballag
Han setter i gang med å lete med lys og lykte, men det virker
som
en umulig oppgave. Ecky er imidlertid overbevist om at han ikke er
alene, og med litt fantasi og utholdenhet ender det med at han klarer
å sette sammen et helt fotballag. Blant spillerne er en
tyrkisk
Beckham-fan, to brasilianske ballvirtuoser, en lesbe fanget i en ung
manns kropp, flere lærkledde bikere og en kjekk hjelpepleier
som
Ecky øyeblikkelig faller for.
Men et lag må også ha en trener. En grinete gammel
fotballproff lar kjærligheten til fotball overkomme
homofobien,
og tar det spesielle laget under sine vinger. Den store dagen for
kampen kommer, og det er på tide å sparke fra seg
og

'Männer wie wir'
Bagersønnen Ecki (Maximilian Brückner) bor i en
lille tysk by, hvor alle er vilde med fodbold. Han er målmand
på byens hold, men da han er skyld i, at holdet taber
mesterskabet og samtidig bliver taget i at kysse en holdkammerat,
bliver han sparket af holdet.
Han sværger nu at
vende tilbage inden en måned og slå byens hold med
et nyt hold, hvor alle spillerne er bøsser! Så han
går i gang med at samle sit homo-hold, men at få
skabt et fungerende hold af de mange forskellige bøssetyper,
der absolut ikke alle er i lige god form, viser sig at være
enormt svært. Ecki klør dog på med
masser af entusiasme, og snart oprinder den store dag, hvor det nye
