Das Ende nahte – Delhi. .... The end was near – Delhi. ....

Keiner wollte wirklich schon heim nach Deutschland. So anstrengend die Rundreise auch gewesen war, so schön und spannend war sie auch. Zugegeben: Schmutz, Gestank und Lärm waren lästig, aber nichts das wir als Reisende wirklich beeinflussen könnten, denn die Lösung der Probleme kann nur aus dem Land heraus, viel auch durch Bildung, und ganz besonders durch Bildung der Landbevölkerung, der Unberührbaren und der Frauen, erfolgen. Es wird dran gearbeitet, die allgemeine Schulpflicht für alle wird 2014 eingeführt werden und auch schon jetzt werden viele Studienplätze für Angehörige niederer Kasten freigehalten.

No one wanted to return to Germany already. As exhausting the tour had been, as beautiful and exciting it was. Granted: dirt, stench and noise were a nuisance, but nothing we travelers could do anything about. Solving those problems can only be done within the country, a lot through education, especially the education of the rural population, the untouchables and the women. A lot is already brought on the way, like compulsory school attendance for all children will be introduced in 2014 and even now many university places for members of lower castes are kept free for them.

Delhi ist zusammen mit Neu-Delhi Hauptstadt und nach Mumbai (Bombay) die zweitgrößte Stadt Indiens. Und da war es wieder, das Verkehrschaos, das uns gleich am Anfang unserer Reise begrüßt hatte, und das wir seither nicht vermissten. Und mit ihm zusammen stellte sich auch Smog ein – Delhi hat eine ziemlich ungesunde Luft.

Delhi together with New Delhi is the capital and behind Mumbai (Bombay) the second largest city of India. And there it was again, the traffic jam, which had greeted us at the beginning of our journey and which we hadn’t missed since. And along with it came smog – Delhi has a very unhealthy air.

In Delhi wird außer Hindi noch hauptsächlich Englisch, Punjabi und Urdu gesprochen, deshalb sind auch die Straßenschilder viersprachig.

Besides Hindi mostly English, Punjabi und Urdu are spoken, hence the street signs are also in these four languages.

	.... we visited the Qutb complex, built from the razed fort Lal Kot, with the Qutb Minar, India’s highest minaret, a column erected to commemorate the Muslim victory over the last Hindu king that are part of the Quwwat-al-Islam Mosque complex. Its construction began in 1193 with stones from 27 torn down Jain- and Hindu temples and it took several attempts to reach its current height of 73 meters and diameter of 15 meters at the bottom and 2,5 meters at the top. Since 1993 it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Die 7,21 Meter hohe und etwa 6,5 Tonnen schwere Eiserne Säule hat auch nach 2000 Jahren keinen Rost angesetzt. Kein Wissenschaftler konnte bisher herausfinden, wie es damals möglich war, 98% reines Schmiedeeisen zu gewinnen. Die gesamte Anlage ist offenbar ein beliebtes Naherholungsziel für die Stadtbevölkerung, sonst wäre nicht gar so viel los gewesen. Oder war mal wieder Feiertag? The nearby 7,21 meters high and 6,5 tons heavy Iron Pillar is one of the world's foremost metallurgical curiosities. Even after 2000 years it still is rust proof. Scientists still wonder how it was possible to make 98% pure wrought iron. The whole complex must be a popular recreational destination for the urban population; otherwise it wouldn’t have been so crowded. Or was it a holiday once again?

Delhis katholische Kathedrale – the Sacred Heart Cathedral At the India Gate, which is the national monument of India and houses the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and whose style was inspired by the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, lots of locals enjoyed their time.

Die Freitagsmoschee besichtigten wir nicht, dafür, damit wir Gebetshäuser aller in Indien vertretenen Hauptreligionen besichtigt haben – zugegeben, an der katholischen Kathedrale sind wir nur vorbeigefahren – den Gurdwara Bangla Sahib. Dieses Mal kamen die Tempelsocken nicht zum Einsatz. Sikhtempel werden nämlich nur barfuß betreten oder gar nicht, Füße und Hände müssen zuvor an speziellen Wasserstellen gereinigt werden und ohne Kopfbedeckung (für die Sikhs ja ganz normal, für Besucher anderer Religionen werden entsprechend kleidsame Teile zur Verfügung gestellt und von extra ausgebildeten Kräften umgebunden), darf das Tempelgelände nicht betreten werden. Jeder Sikhtempel hat eine Großküche um kostenlose Mahlzeiten  – Langar – für Bedürftige, Pilger und wer sonst noch zum Tempel kommt, zu zubereiten. Es arbeiten nur Freiwillige, denn für Sikhs ist der Dienst an der Gemeinschaft eine Selbstverständlichkeit.

We did not visit Jama Masjid, the Friday congregational mosque; instead, so that we had visited houses of worship of all major religions of India – admitted, we only passed by the Sacred Heart Cathedral – the Gurudwara Bangla Sahib, a Sikh temple. This time no need for temple socks. You can only enter Sikh temples bare footed or not at all, feet and hands have to be cleaned in special water basins, and without headgear (usual for Sikhs, and for visitors with other religious beliefs the Gurdwaras provide flattering headscarves, which are tied by specially trained personnel) the grounds are off limits. Every Sikh temple has a large kitchen to prepare free meals – langar – for pilgrims and the needy, and who else is coming to the temple. Only volunteers work there, because every Sikh is serving the community without saying.

Dabei entstand dann auch das „Kindergartenzwerge auf Ausflug“-Gruppenfoto. It was there where the „Kindergarten Gnomes on Tour“ group photo was taken.

Im Hotel wurde unser Reiseleiter Anil von seinen Busmitfahrern zum Abschied reihrumgedrückt, so dass ich fast Angst um ihn hätte bekommen können – nicht dass er noch von uns kräftigen Deutschen beschädigt worden wäre. Bus 1 war wesentlich zurückhaltender, wir haben halt das Drücken deren Reiseleiters Indy mitübernommen. Beide perfekt deutsch sprechend, mit großem Wissen, das sie sehr unterhaltsam vermittelt haben, äußerst angenehm im Umgang, und recht attraktiv.

At the hotel our tour guide Anil was hugged good-bye by everyone from his bus, I almost feared for his health – not that one of us vigorous Germans would damage him. Bus 1 was much more cautious, so we did the hugging of their tour guide Indy for them. Both speak perfect German, have lots of knowledge, are very entertaining and pleasant in conversation, and quite attractive.

Ich habe übrigens die Dienste des uns begleitenden Arztes nicht benötigt, aber er hatte doch einiges zu tun, und war darin sehr kompetent und engagiert, und nebenbei noch ein sehr netter Mensch.
I didn’t need the services of our doctor, but he got some work to do, and was very competent and committed, and also a very nice person.

Ein letztes indisches Abendessen, danach noch ein paar Abschiedsdrinks in gedrückter Stimmung, ein letztes Mal kofferpacken und am Morgen in noch gedrückterer Stimmung auf zum Flughafen. Ich wollte nicht weg. Ich wollte nicht ins Flugzeug. Ich wollte nicht zurück nach Deutschland – zumindest noch nicht gleich. Aber es blieb mir nichts übrig – ich wurde ins Flugzeug geschoben und es hob auch tatsächlich Richtung Deutschland ab. Vor dem Landeanflug großes Verabschieden aller die gleich weiterfliegen würden, bei der Gepäckabholung dann der Restlichen, die weiterfahren würden. Und wie sich später herausstellen würde, lebten wir noch eine ganze Weile nach Indienzeit ....

A final Indian dinner, after that some farewell drinks in depressed mode, packing the suitcases for the last time and in even more depressed mode off to the airport the next morning. I didn’t want to leave. I didn’t want to enter the plane. I didn’t want to return to Germany – at least not yet. But I couldn’t help it – I was shoved into the plane and it really left for Germany. Prior to landing we bid farewell to those who would then board connecting flights, at luggage pick up then the final good-bye to the rest. And as it later turned out, we all would still live after India time for quite a while ....

Schön wars! Gerne wieder – Indien ist ja groß und es gibt noch vieles zu erleben. Wie es Hermann Hesse so treffend ausdrückt: «Wer einmal nicht nur mit den Augen, sondern mit der Seele in Indien gewesen ist, dem bleibt es ein Heimwehland, an welches jedes leiseste Zeichen ihn mahnend erinnert.» Oder wie es im Film ‚The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel‘ (2012) so schön heißt: «Am Ende ist alles gut. Und wenn es noch nicht gut ist, ist es auch nicht das Ende.» It was great! Hopefully I can return someday – there is so much more to explore in India. As Hermann Hesse once so aptly remarked: «For those that have been in India not just with the eyes but with the soul, for them it remains a land of longing, of which one is reminded by the slightest of signs.» Or to use a quote from the movie ‚The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel’ (2012): «Everything will be okay in the end. If it's not okay it's not the end.»
